The National Institute on Aging and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Publish RFAs on Thrombosis in the Elderly
On November 3, 2006, The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) published two Requests for Applications (RFAs) on thrombosis in the elderly. The first RFA solicits investigator-initiated Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations to explore the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical aspects (diagnosis, treatment, and prevention) of venous thrombosis (VT) and thromboembolism (VTE) in the elderly. The second RFA supports Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant applications from applicant organizations directed at the problem of venous thrombosis (VT) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the elderly.
ASH’s many advocacy efforts, including the June 2006 ASH sponsored Workshop on Thrombosis in the Elderly led to the development of these grant opportunities.
Letters of intent, for both grants, are due December 11, 2006, and applications must be completed by January 09, 2007. The total amount to be awarded for applications received in response to both is $3.3 million in total costs (approximately $2.0 million in direct costs). Approximately $2.0 – $2.5 million in total costs ($1.2 - $1.6 million in direct costs) is anticipated for R01 applications. More information about the RFAs is available at:
