President Bush Announces John E. Niederhuber, MD, as NCI Director
August 15, 2006 — John E. Niederhuber, MD, was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as the Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Andrew Von Eschenbach resigned from this position in mid-June, at which time Dr. Niederhuber became acting director of the institute. Prior to being named acting director, Dr. Niederhuber was NCI's Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Director for Translational and Clinical Sciences, a position he assumed in September 2005. Prior to joining the NCI in a full-time capacity, Dr. Niederhuber was a Professor of Surgery and Oncology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, as well as Director of the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.
