Mark McClellan MD, PhD, Announces His Resignation

September 7, 2006 – Medicare Administrator Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, announced his resignation earlier this week. Dr. McClellan said he will leave the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in about five weeks, possibly to join a think tank or academia. A replacement has not yet been named, though early speculation includes Herb Kuhn, Director of the Center for Medicare Management, and Leslie Norwalk, the Deputy Administrator of CMS. Dr. McClellan has been Administrator of CMS since March 2004.
