FY 2007 Appropriations Update

– The House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Appropriations Subcommittee today approved its version of the fiscal year 2007 appropriations bill for those departments and the related agencies. The measure was approved by a party-line vote of 9-7. The appropriations amounts reflect the request submitted by the President.
According to documents provided by the Subcommittee, the National Institutes of Health would receive $28.258 billion, a cut of $306 million below fiscal year 2006 levels. The National Cancer Institute would receive $4.753 billion, a cut of $39.747 million. The National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities would receive $194.229 million, a cut of $1.106 million. The Office of the Director of NIH would receive $667.825 million, an increase of $140.259 million.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would receive $6.073 billion, an increase of $247.482 million over fiscal year 2006 levels. Funding for Health Promotion activities (which include the cancer education, screening, prevention and outreach programs) would receive $964.466 million, an increase of $1.040 million. No details were provided for individual cancer programs.
Funding for nursing education, training, and recruitment programs (including Nurse Reinvestment Act programs) would receive $149.679 million, the same as Fiscal Year 2006.
The measure now moves to the full Appropriations Committee, which is tentatively scheduled to consider the bill on June 13.
