ASH Sponsors Research Agenda-Setting Workshop on Anemia in the Elderly
ASH sponsored an enormously successful research agenda-setting workshop on the Clinical Implications of Anemia in the Elderly on March 1-2, 2004, in Washington, D.C. The Society convened 20 prominent basic, clinical, and translational investigators from the fields of hematology, geriatrics, and gerontology as well as key staff from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to carefully review and identify the principal issues in the anemia of the aged. The workshop sought to identify and characterize the fundamental biologic problems, clarify the pathophysiologic mechanisms, and describe the clinical impact of anemia on affected patients.
The Society hopes to work with NIH to use the information from the workshop in a variety of innovative ways in planning for future programs. By sponsoring conferences such as the Anemia Workshop, ASH can play a unique role in providing NIH with its expertise to help shape and execute long-range research agendas.
