ASH Recommends Changes to ICD-9 Codes for MDS
August 28, 2008 – ASH submitted recommendations to the National Center for Health Statistics asking for an editorial change to ICD-9 codes 238.72-Low grade myelodysplastic syndrome lesions and 238.73-High grade myelodysplastic syndrome lesions.
After hearing from several members who were concerned with these codes, ASH convened a group of experts to analyze the scientific evidence to determine if the existing coding terminology should be updated. Based on the consensus of the group, ASH asked that RAEB-1 be included under 238.72-Low grade MDS and deleted from 238.73-High grade MDS.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) jointly make decisions on ICD-9 coding changes. While the request will be considered in late September, implementation of the coding change, if approved, would not occur for at least a year. ASH will keep you apprised as additional information regarding the Society's recommendations becomes available.
If practitioners encounter coding questions or problems, please contact Government Relations Manager, Stephanie Kart, and let the Society know.
