The American Society of Hematology offers a number of products to support diplomates as they maintain their American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) hematology certification.
The ASH Self-Assessment Program (ASH-SAP) Fourth Edition is a high-quality educational product offering up-to-date information in the field of hematology for internists, hematologists, and hematology-oncology fellows. It features a textbook available in print and online. ASH designates the ASH-SAP for a maximum of 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians participating in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program who complete the ASH-SAP/MOC module will earn medical knowledge points. ASH members who are recertifying in hematology in 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013 will be provided complimentary online access to the ASH-SAP with MOC Module upon request.
For the first time in 2010, ASH held an MOC Learning Session on Friday prior to the start of the ASH annual meeting. Participants utilized an Audience Response System (ARS) to create an interactive learning experience as they reviewed the 25-question 2010 Hematology Update module created by the ABIM. A panel that included Drs. Jonathan Friedberg, Kenneth A. Bauer, and Mark R. Litzow led the participants through the module. Following the session, diplomates were able to submit their answer sheets to the ABIM for MOC medical knowledge credit.
ASH continues to offer chart abstraction tools to assist diplomates in the practice self-evaluation component of MOC. These “ASH PIMs” are Web-based self-evaluation tools that guide board-certified physicians through chart abstractions and a practice system inventory to establish a robust, multi-dimensional practice performance assessment for a chronic condition or preventive service.
Currently, tools are available for myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma, and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. A new chart abstraction tool on perioperative anticoagulation management will be available soon. After completing the chart abstraction, the physician enters the data in the ABIM Self-Directed PIM to receive credit for this practice-improvement activity.
