Continuous Professional Development

ASH offers a number of mechanisms to support hematologists with both continuing medical education and maintaining board certifications.

The American Society of Hematology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians who participate in the designated activities.

CME

ASH keeps a record of the past six years of claimed CME credits for CME-accredited activities. Certificates are issued via email in pdf format.

To inquire into your prior claimed credits and to request a duplicate copy of a certificate, or for any CME-related questions, please send an email to cme@hematology.org.

Non-physicians may request a certificate of attendance for their participation at any of ASH’s CME-accredited activities.

MOC

For information on the maintenance of certification (MOC) requirements for time-limited certificates, please consult with the appropriate certifying board:

Meetings

Annual Meeting and Exposition

The ASH Annual Meeting is the largest medical meeting that supports hematology-related research and advances the practice of hematology. The meeting features numerous sessions specifically geared toward researchers and clinicians and provides the highest quality oral, poster, and plenary presentations based on abstract submissions and review.

This activity is designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Highlights of ASH®

Held a few weeks after the annual meeting, these smaller, clinically focused meetings provide another opportunity to hear leading experts discuss the most practice-changing scientific findings and the latest treatment options that were presented during the annual meeting, but in a more intimate setting.

This activity is designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

State-of-the-Art Symposium

The State-of-the-Art Symposium provides high quality, up-to-date, evidence based continuing medical education that spans the medical field and practice of hematology and hematology-oncology. The expert faculty and smaller, clinically focused program format provide attendees with opportunities to discuss real patient cases with leaders in the field and ample time to network with their colleagues.

This activity is designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Publications

Blood Articles

ASH has partnered with Medscape to provide hematologists with an opportunity to earn CME credits by testing their comprehension of clinical articles published in Blood. One CME article will appear in the journal in the fourth week of every month. Medscape is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide CME for physicians, and this activity is administered by Medscape. Credit will vary depending on the article. There is no charge to participants to earn CME credits through this program.

ASH Self-Assessment Program (ASH-SAP)

The ASH-SAP is a high-quality educational product offering up-to-date information in the field of hematology for internists, hematologists, pediatricians, and hematology-oncology fellows. It includes a textbook available in print and online and an accompanying exam which contains more than 220 questions in adult and pediatric hematology. ASH designates the ASH-SAP for a maximum of 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The American Medical Association has determined that physicians who are not licensed in the U.S. who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Physicians participating in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program who complete the ASH-SAP/MOC module can earn 70 medical knowledge points in addition to 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Online Activities

Practice Improvement Modules (PIM)

The chart abstraction tool (or PIM) allows participants in the ABIM MOC program to conduct self-evaluation of practice performance and earn 20 practice improvement points in addition to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits™. As a service to hematologists, the chart abstraction tool and personal results report are provided free of charge. ASH currently has modules in the area of myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma, immune thrombocytopenia and perioperative anticoagulation management.
