This Highlights of ASH program is based
on a selection of abstracts presented at the 51st ASH Annual Meeting
that are of greatest interest to practitioners. The 2010 program schedule focuses on pathophysiology, diagnosis and
management of common malignant and benign hematologic disorders including acute
and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma, thrombotic disorders, myelodisplastic
syndromes, and myeloproliferative disorders.
At
the completion of the program, attendees will be able to:
- Characterize new
insights into the biology of acute leukemia; summarize current assessments of
potential new agents for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia.
- Examine new
knowledge about the etiology of MDS; update the participants about new agents
to treat MDS.
- Summarize updates
on management of CML, including monitoring, and relapsed/refractory disease; summarize
new information on the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of Ph-negative
myeloproliferative neoplasms.
- Describe the role
of new specific treatments for CLL including immunomodulatory agents, purine
analogues, monoclonal antibodies, immunotherapeutics, and other newly tested
agents.
- Explore newer
insights into molecular biology of B-cell neoplasms; examine new data on
effectiveness and toxicity of targeted agents for B-cell lymphomas.
- Understand
updated data on effectiveness of standard and experimental treatments for
Hodgkin lymphoma; describe the best integration of the twin goals of effective
treatment and minimization of toxicity for Hodgkin lymphoma.
- Describe new
insights into the basic abnormalities of hemostasis that lead to abnormal
clotting.
- Review newly
available information about the role, effectiveness and complications of newer
treatments for ITP.
- Summarize updated
information about newer anti-thrombotic agents; describe new insights into
management f complex situations in which abnormal thrombosis occurs.
- Summarize updated
information about basic mechanisms of iron absorption and utilization; understand
new information about classification of anemic states.
- Summarize the
latest results from major studies of new approaches to myeloma treatment; examine
the evidence justifying new approaches to management of newly diagnosed and
relapsed myeloma.
- Summarize updated
information on new aspects of management of patients during high dose
chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT); summarize
information on new insights into the appropriate integration of HSCT into the
management of lymphoid and myeloid malignancies.
