2012 ASH Advocacy Leadership Institute Summary and Agenda
As part of the ASH Recruitment & Retention Initiative and in order to provide additional opportunities for ASH members to learn more about advocacy and become engaged in the Society, the ASH Government Relations, Practice, and Scientific Affairs department held a two-day workshop – the ASH Advocacy Leadership Institute – on September 12 and 13, 2012. The selection of participants was based on a nomination process; over 70 nominations were received. The final 26 participants were a diverse mix of basic and clinical researchers and practitioners, junior, mid-career and senior faculty, malignant and non-malignant hematologists, as well as gender and geographic location.
The first day of the Institute focused on learning about the legislative process, health policy, and advocacy strategies. Faculty of the Advocacy Leadership Institute included ASH Government Relations staff and consultants, past participant of the 2012 Advocacy Leadership Institute, as well as guest speakers from the Administration, Congress, and other advocacy organizations, including former Congressman John Edward Porter and the Deputy Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Dr. Susan Shurin. The second day included visits to over 60 congressional offices to apply what was learned on the first day. Institute participants visited their congressional delegations to urge Congress to avert sequestration, support balanced approach to deficit reduction, and recognize the importance of biomedical research by investing in the National Institutes of Health.
