(WASHINGTON)– The American Society of Hematology (ASH), the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to the causes and treatment of blood disorders, will recognize Samuel Silver, MD, PhD, Assistant Dean for Research and Professor of Internal Medicine and Hematology-Oncology at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor with an Exemplary Service Award for his leadership in advancing the practice and physician reimbursement priorities of the Society.
Established in 1998, the ASH Exemplary Service Award recognizes an individual whose outstanding service has significantly advanced the interests of the Society over a period of several years. This award will be presented to Dr. Silver on Friday, December 7, during the 54th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta.
Through his leadership roles within ASH, including service as Councillor, Chair of the Committee on Practice, Chair of the Subcommittee on Reimbursement, and several other committee and special task force appointments, Dr. Silver has maintained his commitment to moving the Society’s agenda forward specifically related to practice and physician reimbursement. Over the past several years, Dr. Silver has led ASH’s efforts to improve reimbursement for Medicare billing codes, guide local coverage decisions, help to correct Medicare reimbursement limits for multiple drugs and biologics used by hematology practices, and improve payment for physician services related to bone marrow and stem cell transplant procedures. He has represented the Society at multiple meetings and forums, including the American Medical Association’s Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update and Current Procedural Terminology committees and coalitions of other medical specialty societies. He has also co-chaired the ASH-American Society of Clinical Oncology Carrier Advisory Committee Network Meeting.
Dr. Silver has frequently carried ASH’s message to Capitol Hill, meeting with Members of Congress and their staff to discuss practice issues, and has become a leading advocate for practice and physician reimbursement.
In addition to his work on physician reimbursement, Dr. Silver has led multiple ASH initiatives, including moderating a webinar on autoimmune hemolytic anemia, creating the ASH Consultative Hematology Course, and improving the quality of hematologic care through practice guidelines.
“Dr. Silver’s efforts have been instrumental in the Society’s ability to influence physician reimbursement,” said ASH President Armand Keating, MD, of the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. “We are honored to recognize Dr. Silver with the Exemplary Service Award, but most importantly, we want to thank him for his demonstrated leadership toward advancing ASH’s reimbursement priorities and for his remarkable service to advance the Society’s mission.”
